Area municipalities and law enforcement agencies are taking part in the fall Drug Take Back initiative Saturday, Oct. 24.
The City of Elkhorn will have its drug take back from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Walgreens, 939 N. Wisconsin St.
The City of Delavan Police Department, 123 S. Second St., will host a take back from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, 1770 Highway NN, Elkhorn, hosts a drop box for unused medication that can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Many communities in Walworth County have drug take back drop boxes. Residents can visit doseofrealitywi.gov to find a drop box in their local community.
Because of COVID-19, some community drop boxes are not accessible at this time. It’s advised to call ahead and confirm the location where the drop box is can be accessed.
About the take back
The goal of this initiative is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications. Unused or expired medications should never be flushed or poured down the drain.
Residents my bring prescription (controlled and non-controlled) and over-the-counter medications, ointments, inhalers, patches, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vape cartridges and devices (with batteries removed), vials and pet medications.
Residents are asked not to bring illegal drugs, needles/sharps, mercury thermometers, aerosol cans, bio-hazardous materials (anything containing a bodily fluid or blood) flares, personal care products (shampoos, soaps, lotions, sunscreens, etc.) household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, chemicals, oil or gas) acids or any vape devises containing batteries of any kind.
Participants may dispose of solid, non-liquid medications by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into a disposal box or into a clear sealable plastic bag. Plastic pill containers will not be collected.
