Matthew Remus, the choir director for Elkhorn Area High and Middle schools, said it didn’t take long to realize he needed to seek assistance for this week’s summer musical.
“I was working on the choreography and thought, ‘This is bad,’ so I texted Paris Barker and said, ‘I need help.’ Thankfully, she agreed,” Remus, who is directing High School Musical Jr., said.
The Summer Elk Players will be putting on the show at 7 p.m., Friday at the high school. The cast and crew, along with Remus, Barker and Lisa Dettman-Webb have spent a significant amount of time rehearsing.
Barker, who graduated this spring from the high school, said she helped with the choreography in EAHS’ production of Mary Poppins and a couple of scenes in Peter Pan. And for the most part, she’s using her own ideas for High School Musical Jr.
“Sometimes there’s videos which show suggested choreography but if I don’t like that I come up with my own and it’s fun to be creative,” she said.
Marley Sulik, who will be in the 8th grade at the middle school this fall, is humble about landing the role of Gabriella Montez.
“It’s a compliment that they chose me because a lot of people here are really talented,” Sulik said.
High School Musical Jr. will be presented at 7 p.m., Friday, July 19 in the auditorium at Elkhorn Area High School. Admission is $5 a person.
In the July 18 Elkhorn Independent you can find the rest of the story, including the interviews with two cast members and the cast list, and see more photos from a recent rehearsal.
