EAHS students compete at state; four nominated for ‘exemplary performance’
Wisconsin School Music Association recently announced the 526 middle school and high school students and large ensembles identified by adjudicators for “exemplary performances” in State Solo & Ensemble.
The students competed at one of 10 university locations on April 27, May 3 or May 4. Elkhorn Area High School students had 19 students compete April 27 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. To qualify, they performed solos and duets, which were critiqued by music judges, and earned high enough scores to advance.
From more than 11,000 vocal and instrumental solos and ensembles scheduled at the 2019 WSMA state festivals, 526 were selected as “exemplary” in the Exemplary Performance Recognition Project.
Four Elkhorn Area High School received a nomination for an exemplary performance award – Aydon Clikeman, classical solo and musical theater solo; Scott Rosendahl, piano solo and piano duet; Elise Texidor, classical solo; and, Afton Malvitz, classical solo.
“These students… are the best performers that their adjudicator heard all day. The Elkhorn music department is very proud to have four students this year who earned these nominations,” a post on social media stated.
State festival adjudicators identified the most exceptional performances at each of the state festival campuses through a two-step process:
- Nomination – Throughout the day, adjudicators had an opportunity to nominate a limited number of performances that were truly exceptional – beyond what is typically expected.
- Final Selection – At the end of the day, each adjudicator selected the most exceptional performances to receive the exemplary recognition from among those nominated.
Selected students and schools receive a certificate from WSMA in recognition of outstanding performance at the state festival.
Two days prior to the state competition, the EAHS students that qualified performed in a Night with the Stars event. It was organized by student Amber Glassel, who in addition to performing served as the MC at the event.
