The local Habitat for Humanity chapter is gearing up for its 13th build and is accepting applications through the end of January.
Mary Jane Pyszka, who serves as treasurer on the board of directors for Walworth County Habitat for Humanity, said the home will be built in Bloomfield Township but applicants only need to be Walworth County residents.
“The build will begin in the spring after a screening committee reviews the applications and chooses who the home will be built for,” Pyszka said.
She said Habitat houses are built based on the needs of the chosen applicant – whether it’s a disabled person, a couple or a family.
In Walworth County, Habitat for Humanity has built 12 homes in the past 20 years.
“The homes aren’t free but there is no interest and that can be a big savings. The total cost is based on what they’re able to afford and the length of the mortgage can vary,” Pyszka said. “They’ll know their payment amount before the home is built and they are required to put sweat equity into it – that’s part of the deal.”
The home costs less than a typical new home because the labor is primarily done by volunteers, though professionals are brought in and paid for work where their expertise and licenses are required.
Speaking of volunteers, Pyszka said the local chapter is seeking people to help out in a variety of capacities – for the next home and beyond.
“People say, ‘I don’t know how to put up a wall.’ That’s fine but can you run errands for us, or provide a meal to the volunteers? It’s not just the physical parts of building but support in a variety of ways. People are able to help us with all sorts of abilities,” she said.
Informational sheets can be picked up at various places throughout the county – such as grocery stores – and are also available on the website. All applicants must attend an informational meeting but can do so prior to applying or shortly after, according to Pyszka.
“Usually all that apply are worthy of being selected but applicants are chosen based on need, their ability to pay and their willingness to partner with the organization,” Pyszka said.
