The City of Elkhorn Municipal Services and Utilities Committee met Monday to discuss the city’s ordinance requiring that sump pumps be connected to storm drainage sewers.

Under ordinance 13.4.040, all sump pumps are required to be connected to existing storms sewers, laterals or storm sewer catch basins, unless after being inspected by the City is determined that connecting to any of the above is not feasible.

Public Works Manager Matt Lindstrom said at this time, when the city completes road construction it is including drain tile in the back of the curb, allowing for sump pumps to be connected and then drained into a catch basin.

However, he said, the concern is that the city has identified locations where multiple homeowners are discharging their sump pumps into the street, which can cause damage to city infrastructure (streets and curbs specifically), a public nuisance and safety concerns, especially in colder weather where sump pump discharges could freeze in the street or on sidewalks.
