Elkhorn Mole Fest is a Mexican food and music festival making its debut at the Walworth County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday. The event will also feature a Mole competition among Mexican families and restaurants.
Mole is the generic name for a number of sauces originally used in Mexican cuisine, as well as for dishes based on these sauces, according to the website. Generally, a mole sauce contains a fruit, chili pepper, nut and spices such as black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, and chocolate.
The most classical mole version is a dark red or brown sauce, which is generally served over various types of meats or enchiladas. Mole is a special occasion staple in many Mexican households.
Sponsored by 97.9 FM Radio Caliente and Modelo Beer, the event will offer free admission and free parking.
“Enjoy all kinds of Mexican food but make sure you try the Mole sauces as they are the most prized recipes of almost every Mexican family and restaurants. Who has the best? You decide,” according to a post on the Fairgrounds website.
To make it officially a fest, the event will also offer carnival rides “for the kid in everyone” and art village and cultural activities.
And to celebrate the music of Mexico, a full slate of live entertainment will be featured throughout the weekend.
Mole Fest is being hosted by the fairgrounds and the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and will open at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 30 and at 10 a.m., Sunday, July 1 at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St. in Elkhorn.
