Gateway Technical College will spotlight the environment at its annual “Celebrate Earth Day” event Saturday with fun, hands-on activities for all ages to learn how to be stewards of the environment.
The event will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 21 at Gateway’s Elkhorn Campus, 400 County Rd. H, Elkhorn.
“Gateway is proud of this community event that demonstrates Gateway’s commitment to sustainability, as well as adding to community learning about sustainable practices,” said Gateway Public Relations and Internal Communications Director Jayne Herring.
“The event offers a wide array of hands-on activities and ways to gain environmental knowledge in areas such as recycling, re-purposing, alternative energy, gardening and organic food. The event also offers children many fun opportunities to learn, through an assortment of hands-on activities and games,” Herring added.
Prior to the general event, there will be a White River trail cleanup near the campus from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Park in the southeast lot of the campus and walk to the nearby trail.
Features on the Elkhorn campus will include:
– Workshops such as canning produce, native birds of Wisconsin and car care
– Scavenger hunt
– Farmers market with items such as plants, apple cider, applesauce, kettle popcorn, naturally made beauty products, artwork and other assorted products
– Demonstrations
– Children’s activities such as the Kohl’s Wildlife Theater, crafts, kids’ outdoor fitness challenge, build a birdhouse, plant a flower for Mother’s Day, a petting zoo and the kids’ fitness challenge
– Informational booths
– Nature hike
– Green/farmers market
– Plant sale
– Bare-foot oak tree sapling handouts
– Recycle center (electronics, computers, printers, athletic shoes, prescription eye glasses, VCR and DVD players.)
Gateway will also host Earth Day events at its Kenosha campus.
