Jon Stopple named to regional, state and All-America teams
Jon Stopple, of Elkhorn, has earned a wealth of accolades for his academic ability as well as his prowess on the soccer field as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Among the honors, Stopple, a midfielder, was selected third team United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar All-America.
In the classroom, Stopple was named to the CoSIDA academic All-America team along with achieving all-district and all-state honors on the field.
Stopple and Logan Rinderknecht – who also is a member of the UW-Platteville men’s soccer team – earned all-Wisconsin first team after previously being announced for regional honors. The two were the top scorers for the Pioneers and had four game winning goals each.
In addition, Stopple was named the all-Wisconsin Sportsman of the Year.
Stopple was selected second team 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America academic All-America Division III men’s soccer and became the 25th Pioneer and second player in program history to earn academic All-America honors.
In 2016, what was supposed to be Stopple’s senior season, he tore his ACL the first day of preseason, forcing him to miss the entire year. On track to graduate from UW-Platteville in four years, it looked like Stopple’s soccer career was over. Instead he elected to pick up a minor, was granted a medical redshirt and returned to Platteville last fall.
An electrical engineering major with a 4.0 grade point average, Stopple also was selected as a 2017 United Soccer Coaches all-district and all-Wisconsin member. He recorded nine goals on the season, including four game winners.
Stopple was second on the Pioneers in goals with nine, a career high, and second in points with 18, helping lead them to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history. In his final two seasons at UW-Platteville, Stopple was 8-of-9 on penalty kicks, and he ended his career with 19 goals and six assists.
Stopple is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
