Walworth County Home Community Education has received a grant from the Lori Genske Endowment Fund of the Elkhorn Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc. to support the HCE’s project, Wisconsin Bookworms Reading Program.
The project began in 1998 with innovative grant funding. Wisconsin Bookworms will have reached 84,445 Wisconsin pre-school age children from 1998-2016. The total number of books being distributed through May of 2016 is 750,000.
Wisconsin Bookworms is a collaboration and outreach effort of the Wisconsin Association for Home Community Education, UW-Extension Family Living Programs and Wisconsin Public Television to provide free books and an early reading experience for children from limited income families. Each month volunteers read award winning books to children, engage them in a related activity, give books to the children and provide educational activity sheets for their families.
The Lori Genske Endowment Fund of the Elkhorn Fund is a resource for area nonprofit organizations whose programs and service are working for the betterment of our communities. Grants from the Lori Genske Endowment Fund of the Elkhorn Fund have supported the arts, education, environment, health and human service and historic preservation.
