Annual event part of Elkhorn’s holiday tradition

Slated to kick off at 10 a.m. on Dec. 2, the Elkhorn Parks and Recreation Department’s 5K Reindeer Run has become a staple in local festivities kicking off the holiday season.
According to Parks and Recreation Director Wendy Meyer, the run, now in its fifth year, got its start when a former alderman who didn’t think the event would draw enough interest challenged her.
“When anyone says I will fail, I push forward,” Meyer said. “That first year, not only did we have numerous sponsors and companies that put teams together, we had more than 100 people. I was thrilled.”
And that success continued to expand, drawing more and more participants each year. Last year, according to Meyer, the event drew roughly 275 participants.
Meyer said she feels that the event has become a holiday tradition in the community, joining staples such as the annual tree lighting ceremony and the Christmas Card Town Parade.
