Contest being held for future domestic violence shelter

The Association for Prevention of Family Violence is seeking a name for a new shelter that will be built in Walworth County to provide safe, temporary housing to families fleeing domestic violence.

The APFV, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been providing help to victims in Walworth County since 1978. It serves more than 700 victims each year and in 2016, 48 families (18 women and children) needed to relocate.

Because the closest shelter for such victims is at least 30 miles away – and other shelters are often at capacity – local motels are often the only option for the APFV. The goal is to have an emergency shelter for domestic violence victims built and running in Walworth County by 2020.

Those 14 years of age and older are encouraged to submit a suggested name for the new shelter. The limit is one entry per person and the winner will receive a $250 VISA gift card. The deadline to submit an entry is Oct. 1 and can be done by visiting walworthcountyshelterbuild.com and following a link or going directly to the contest page at https://1.shortstack.com/rl6fMk.

A panel of judges will choose the winning entry, which will be announced on Oct. 25.

The APFV is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Anyone that is a victim of domestic violence – or knows someone that needs help should call the APFV at (262) 723-4653 or visit apfvwalworth.com.
