The Elkhorn Area Fire Department is holding its 47th annual Elkhorn Firefighters Street Dance from 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday outside of the fire station at 13 South Broad St.
The event will kick off with food and drinks at 6 p.m. New this year, food offerings will include barbecue staples such as pulled pork, pulled chicken and ribs. Half-rack barbecue ribs will be sold for $10, and shredded chicken and pork sandwiches will be available for $6. Meals include chips, a pickle and a choice of soda.
Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the popular area country band Chasin’ Mason, which will perform on the main stage beginning at 8 p.m., sponsored by Sugar Creek Mutual Insurance, Leece and Phillip’s Law Office, Wedige Automotive, One Main and Skipper Bud’s.
An ID will be required to receive a wristband for alcoholic beverages and tickets will be available at the door. As the dance is intended to be adult entertainment, admittance will be restricted to patrons 21 and older, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Elkhorn Area Fire Department in numerous ways to not only continue its fire prevention and education efforts, but also firefighter safety. Specifically, proceeds from this year’s event will fund specialized fire and rescue equipment, which includes personal protective gear needed by department volunteers for structural fire fighting, emergency medical and rescue supplies, and other items the department needs to better serve the community’s fire and medical needs.
South Broad Street will be closed off for the duration of the event, as well as during set up and tear down.
The Elkhorn Area Fire Department not only serves the City of Elkhorn, but also the towns of Sugar Creek, LaFayette and Geneva. However, the event is not limited to residents of those areas and a letter sent out by the department’s dance committee encourages all who are interested to come out for the event and entertainment.
On top of offering fire emergency services and fire inspections within its coverage area, the department also offers numerous safety education programs each year.
At the elementary school level, the Fall Fire Safety Program takes place during National Fire Safety Week. As a part of the program, fire department members visit all of the elementary schools in its service area. Program highlights include calling 911, smoke detector awareness, planning fire escape routes, fire apparatus tours and the stop, drop and roll technique.
Other programs provided by the department include public safety and day care presentations, fire extinguisher training for public and private organizations and companies, and guided tours of the fire station for community organizations.
