Elkhorn voters decided the outcome of two contested races on Tuesday’s ballot.

In the race for District 1 Alderperson in the City of Elkhorn, Tim Shiroda won the seat with 98 votes over Richard Geaslen with 74.

Shiroda said prior to the election he would “work hard to prioritize projects within the city and be a fiscal ‘watch dog’ of the taxpayer’s money.”

Two newcomers to the political scene – Jenny Ray and Paul Martell, garnered the most votes with 1109 and 985, respectively, for the two seats up for election on the Elkhorn Area School District Board. They defeated Scott Beatse, 652 votes, the lone incumbent in that race.

Martell, a retired teacher who taught for 33 years in the district, said prior to the election that being elected would allow him to shift his focus of serving students, families and the community in a new capacity.

Ray said after becoming more involved in the district the past several years, she decided to run for office to be “a voice for families. My strengths are working together as a team, asking pertinent questions, listening to all options, and requesting feedback so that we are continually improving.”
