David Broga, 14, a freshman at Elkhorn Area High School, was recently honored at his Eagle Court of Honor for his project of creating bee hotels for Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Williams Bay.
Broga, the son of Brian and Susan and a member of Boy Scout Troop 243 in Elkhorn, became a Cub Scout in first grade. He progressed from Bobcat to Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos. Broga achieved the Arrow of Light, which is the highest rank in Cub Scouting, which requires the completion of four required adventures and three elective adventures.
Broga crossed over from Cub Scouts into Boy Scouts during fifth grade. He started at the Scout level and has advanced ranks to Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle Scout.
To become an Eagle Scout – something fewer than seven out of 100 Boy Scouts achieve – Broga earned a minimum of 21 merit badges, with 13 of those being Eagle-required. He served at least six months in a troop leadership position and he was active in his troop.
Broga planned, developed, and gave leadership to others in a service project. His Eagle project was creating bee hotels for Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy, a project he planned, developed and gave leadership to others throughout. The project was helpful because the bee hotels will provide places for solitary native bees to lay their eggs. He demonstrated Scout spirit by living the Scout Oath and Scout Law, participated in a Scoutmaster Conference and passed his Eagle Board of Review on Nov. 20. His Eagle Court of Honor was held Jan. 31.
Troop 243 Scoutmaster is Mike Holmes; assistant is Terry Schemmel, and Broga’s den leaders in Cub Scout Pack 225, in his younger scouting days, were Mike Benfield and Tom French. Mike Walton served as Broga’s Eagle Scout Project Advisor; Harold Friestad, Kishwauketoe Board President was the project beneficiary contact, and Christine Wen, of the UW-Extension, also assisted with the project.
