When results came back from city managers on their thoughts on the future disposition of the City of Elkhorn’s City Hall, one thing was clear; the current building is not where they want to stay.

Members of the Elkhorn Finance and Judicial Committee discussed the comments submitted by city staff at its meeting on Aug. 22.

Councilmembers approved a motion in August to request department heads to provide written reports on where they would like their employees and the needed space, and also to have department heads, or a representative, attend the committee’s meeting on Aug. 22. The motion also included asking city employees on whether they would like to stay in the current City Hall or find a new location.

At the Aug. 22 meeting, City Administrator Sam Tapson said results were pretty straight forward and the consensus is evident that if financially feasible, the location should probably remain somewhere downtown. However, he noted as staff, they agreed the business of the city could be conducted at any location.

“But, from the standpoint of the community, we probably ought to look toward a downtown site,” he said.

Councilmembers were asked to submit recommendations and suggestions for community members for the committee to Tapson. Likewise, Tapson was asked to pull together a reasonable timeline for the project to keep things moving forward and bring it to the next committee meeting.

No formal motions were made at the Aug. 22 meeting and discussions are expected to continue this September on the topic.
