Slight rate increase to account for added operating expenses with full season

The City of Elkhorn Common Council voted in favor of an increased fee schedule for Sunset Pool’s 2016 season at a special council meeting March 14.
Under the new fee schedule, the price for an individual resident season pass will be $65 and $85 for non-residents. The price for a family-of-four season pass will be $130, $175 for non-residents, and additional family members and one baby-sitter can be added for an extra $10 per person. Proof of identification is required at the time of purchase.
New this year, the City of Elkhorn Parks and Recreation Department will offer a $3 daily evening pass, good between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.
Those who buy a family pass prior to June 12 will save $10 off the listed price, and those who buy individual passes prior to June 12 will save $5.
While the price increase might come as a shock to some, the increase still leaves prices lower than originally proposed for a full season last year. Prices were reduced to accommodate last year’s shortened season.
Additionally, Parks and Recreation Director Wendy Meyer said this year the pool will be open a full season, a third longer compared to last year’s late opening, and for longer hours.
“You’re going to get 33 percent more pool-time for $10 more than what you paid last year,” Alderman Scott McClory said.
City Administrator Sam Tapson said Monday raising the prices slightly this year allows the city to “balance out,” figuring out where operating costs for a full year would fall and allow the city to review where prices need to be in 2017 without hiking rates too much and scaring away potential pool-goers.
