With Tuesday being the deadline for candidates to file nomination papers and a declaration of candidacy for seats on the City of Elkhorn Common Council, it seems the ballot will see at least two contested races, with one seat empty and seeking a replacement.
City of Elkhorn Clerk Cairie Virrueta said Monday afternoon that while candidates still had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to file paperwork, she had already received paperwork from numerous candidates.
The most heavily contested race on April’s ballot, as indicated by paperwork turned in as of Monday afternoon, will likely be the mayoral seat. Incumbent Mayor Brian Olson, who has filed all paperwork to run for re-election, will be running against Alderman Tom Myrin, serving the city’s fifth district, and former mayor Howie Reynolds.
In Elkhorn’s District 4, incumbent Scott McClory will be running against newcomer Gonzalo Vega.
In District 3, Virrueta said Bruce Lechner, who was appointed by the council last summer to fill the vacancy left when Jim D’Alessandro resigned, had taken out papers and indicated he would be pursuing the seat in the upcoming election. Virrueta said Lechner had not yet turned in nomination papers and a declaration of candidacy Monday, though he had not turned in a declaration of non-candidacy either. Lechner had until 5 p.m. on Tuesday to do so.
In Aldermanic District 6, Alderman Greg Huss has filed a declaration of non-candidacy. No one has filed papers indicating interest in pursuing Huss’s seat.
Alderman in the three districts up for election receive a pay of $5,480 annually for their time with the city.
