Bids are in for proposed improvements to Elkhorn’s Tasch Park and while three of the four are higher than estimated, one came in more than $1,000 lower.

City Engineer Paul Vanhenkelum said Nov. 23 while he has never worked with Western Contractors, which provided the lowest bid and do a lot of park projects, he called around and received good references and recommendations from others around the region.

Vanhenkelum said while they’re at about his estimate, he didn’t make a recommendation for them simply because the cost to sod the park is pretty expensive. Additionally, Vanhenkelum noted the addition of and under drain for ball field drainage also came in higher than estimated.

The sod would be the final step of the project, with an estimated completion date of May 15, which would allow new ball fields to be playable next summer if the project is completed in the spring. If the city were to seed the fields rather than sod them, it would save about $16,600, Vanhenkelum said.
