The City of Elkhorn Municipal Services and Utilities Committee continued further discussions about the future of the city’s leaf collection program Monday night.
With previous discussions focusing on the idea of a bagged leaf collection, Public Works Manager Martin Nuss provided the committee with a memo outlining what it would cost if the city were to purchase and provide bags for city residents.
According to Nuss’s memo, if each of the about 2,800 residential stops each week during leaf collection were to get five bags a month it would equate to about 14,000 bags each month. With purchasing in bulk, Nuss’s memo said purchasing in the 20,000 to 30,000 range bags generally cost less than 50 cents each.
City Administrator Sam Tapson said Monday night if the city were to decide to move to a bagged leaf collection program and provide residents with bags, the city might run into concerns with storage and distribution of said bags. He said most communities that go to a bagged program do not provide residents with bags.
