Streets and city infrastructure were among items at the forefront of discussions Monday night when the City of Elkhorn Common Council began discussing what capital improvement projects it might like to consider as possibilities over the next few years at its Committee of the Whole meeting.

Mayor Brian Olson kicked off discussions Monday night noting Monday’s meeting was merely a work session and the council wasn’t making any final decisions on what projects it would take on in the future.

City Administrator Sam Tapson said what staff was looking to do was identify the top tier projects the council wants to accomplish so staff could begin to determine if they’re affordable in the first place and exactly how the city might finance them when those projects come up. Additionally, Tapson noted borrowing prior to 2018 might be feasible, but it wouldn’t be a wise decision.

“Everything we’re doing is really setting the stage, setting the stage to move forward,” he said.

“So, if we want to do Jackson Street in 2017, we know that we’re going to have to position ourselves to have $2.5 million available to us in whatever format,” he said.
