The Walworth County Executive Committee voted unanimously Feb. 16 to repeal a section of a county ordinance that limits a supervisor from serving as chairman of the County Board for than four consecutive terms.
Walworth County Board Chairman Nancy Russell recused herself from discussing and voting on the topic and left the county boardroom during the discussion.
Russell will mark the end of four two-year terms in April 2016. She was elected by the board to finish former Chairman Ann Lohrmann’s term in July 2007 and began her first complete two-year term in April 2008.
The matter was referred to the committee after Supervisor and Executive Committee Chairman David Weber submitted a letter to the County Board saying he was confident if a majority of the board felt leadership change was needed, “It won’t hesitate to act.” Additionally, he said Russell serves as an example of why the term limit doesn’t make sense.
“Nancy has done an outstanding job leading the county,” he wrote in the Jan. 29 letter. “Why would we want to arbitrarily exclude a proven leader from seeking the chairpersonship if he or she wishes to continue serving?”
