Candidates for city positions able to circulate nomination papers

As quickly as election season ended it has once again begun, as parties interested in running for an elected position on the City of Elkhorn Common Council were able to begin circulating nomination papers on Monday.
Aldermanic districts up for election in the April 2015 election include District 1, currently held by Hoss Rehberg, District 2, currently held by Gary Payson, Sr., and District 5, currently held by newcomer Tom Myrin who was elected to fill the vacant position last spring.
According to City of Elkhorn Clerk Cairie Virrueta, requirements to run in the election are the same as they have been in the past and include filing forms with the city clerk in addition to nomination papers.
Virrueta said as a Class 4 City, those circulating nomination papers in Elkhorn are required to collect a minimum of 20 signatures and up to 40. Nomination papers and a Declaration of Candidacy are due to the clerk’s office by 5 p.m. on the first Tuesday of January.
Currently, Virrueta said a packet – which includes all necessary forms and instructions – is available at the clerk’s office and will be through the January due date.
“It’s pretty straight forward, it’s a pretty simple process,” she said.
Paperwork in the packet includes a campaign registration statement, nomination paper for nonpartisan office and a declaration of candidacy. According to the paperwork, a registration statement should be filed prior to circulating nomination papers and prior to spending or collecting funds for the election.
All paperwork must be filed on time with the city clerk’s office in order for candidates to be placed on the ballot at the Feb. 17 spring primary and the April 7 spring election.
The position of municipal judge will also be up for election this spring, currently held by Thomas Meyer. Those interested in this position must also file a Statement of Economic Interests with the Government Accountability board, prior to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 9.
