Walworth County Sheriff’s Deputies shot and killed a 39-year-old Elkhorn man early Thursday morning after he allegedly beat his mother’s boyfriend, stole a squad car and came toward deputies with a shotgun.
Jeremiah B. Krubert was pronounced dead at the intersection of Millard and Pierce roads in the Town of Sugar Creek where he was confronted by authorities after crashing the stolen squad car, according to a press release issued by the sheriff’s department Thursday afternoon.
Officials allege Krubert came at them with a shotgun from the stolen squad car and ignored commands to drop the weapon. The release said three deputies shot at Krubert before he fell to the ground.
The incident began at 2:45 a.m. when deputies were dispatched to N7248 Highway O in the Town of LaGrange for a report of a home invasion. The home is owned by Michael J. Boyd, 54, and his girlfriend, Kathleen M. Krubert, 58, who is Jeremiah Krubert’s mother.
Authorities allege Jeremiah Krubert used a pipe or other metal object to beat Boyd, extensively injuring his head and face. He was initially transported to Aurora Lakeland Medical Center near Elkhorn, but was later transported to another medical facility in the Milwaukee area due to the severity of his injuries.
A deputy responding to the scene encountered Jeremiah Krubert trying to leave the property in a truck owned by Boyd. Krubert allegedly exited the truck and confronted the deputy with an “edged weapon,” according to the press release.
The deputy reportedly fired his gun several times, but Krubert escaped by stealing the deputy’s squad car and heading south on Highway O toward Millard Road.
After a short pursuit, Krubert crashed the squad car, setting up the fatal confrontation with deputies.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Justice Office of Criminal Investigation is probing the incident with assistance from the Sheriff’s Department.
The four deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for fatal shootings, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
This is the third fatal shooting involving deputies in the past 13 months.
