Community members plan 5K walk Saturday to support people of color
A group of East Troy community members have organized a 5K walk to show support for the black community and all people of color in the light of protests across the nation in the aftermath of the alleged murder by police of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.
The 5K walk will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, beginning and ending at East Troy High School, 3128 Graydon Ave.
Organizers are asking attendees wear a mask and practice social distancing to protect themselves and others from the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19.
“We want our message of demanding racial justice to show that our primarily all-white community does not only stand with all people of color, but especially to show the few minorities in our own community that their voices are being heard,” said Samantha Mudlaff, one of the event organizers.
During the walk, organizers will be handing out flyers and resources to help people educate themselves and others.
Mudlaff said the group has been in touch with Village of East Troy Police Chief Jeremy Swedrowski to inform the department of the plans for the walk before they went public with the information.
“We also invited the Police Department to join our peaceful walk in order to show their respect to all of those who have lost their loved ones to this broken system that we live in,” Mudlaff said.
