Utility work on the East Troy Village Square is still underway, but events scheduled for Village Square Park will go on as planned, including tonight’s May the Fourth Be With You celebration.
The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce is kicking off its First Fridays season with the Star Wars-themed evening.
“There’s no construction going on in Village Square Park and that’s where all the festivities take place, so there’s no reason to not hold the event,” chamber Executive Director Vanessa Lenz said Tuesday. “The construction will stop before the event time and there will be full access to the square.”
“You’ll have some dust, because the road’s not paved yet, but that’s all,” Village of East Troy Department of Public Works Director Jason Equitz said.
Lenz said parking was available on the side streets around the square.
“You shouldn’t have to walk more than a block or so,” she said. “We’re trying to embrace the situation. It’s going to be a beautiful day and the weather forecast is great.”
The celebration of a galaxy far, far away will feature Star Wars music by radio station WFAQ-LP FM, a costume contest, make-your-own lightsabers and other Force-themed activities, Lenz said.
“Star Wars is so popular and we’re expecting a great turnout Friday,” she continued.
Equitz said the utility work on the Village Square is still ahead of schedule and should be done before the end of the month.
“I’m predicting this will all be done by Memorial Day weekend,” Equitz said.
That is good news for the chamber and it’s annual Corn and Brat Roast, Brewfest and Community-Wide Rummage Sale, which Lenz said draws large crowds all weekend long.
Equitz said in the meantime, the road closures around and on the Village Square will lessen and, weather permitting, they were looking at paving the roads within the next week or two.
“We have a little more of a rough patch to get through but once the asphalt goes down, it will all start coming together,” Equitz said.
The community will have a bit of a respite from the construction on/near the square until July 5, when Walworth County will start replacing the bridge on Highway G/120 over Honey Creek. Equitz said that project should be done near the end of October.
“The county is going to be setting up message board ahead of time to let people know the road will be closed starting July 5,” Equitz said.
