Man allegedly tried to break into Lyons home

A status conference is scheduled for Dec. 7 for a Lyons man who pleaded not guilty Sept. 29 to trying to break into a house in the Town of Lyons.

Jacob A. Johnson, 24, of Lyons, was charged Sept. 13 in Walworth County Circuit Court with possession of burglarious tools, attempted burglary of a building or dwelling and criminal damage to property, all as a repeater.

The neighbor of a Church Street home heard glass breaking at the house and knew the residents were up North and the house had been broken into about a month ago, according to the complaint. The neighbor walked toward the house and allegedly saw Johnson, whom he recognized, attempting to pry a window open with a wrench, according to the complaint. The neighbor yelled at Johnson to stop, and he ran away. Other people in the area tried to pursue Johnson in a vehicle but lost him.

When police arrived, they saw a large wrench still sticking out of the bottom of the window and shattered glass on the ground, according to the complaint. Johnson was allegedly found at his residence in the back part of his grandmother’s tavern, Bonnie and Betty’s Bar, but denied being involved in the attempted burglary.

Yellow latex gloves, which the neighbor said Johnson was wearing when he ran from the home, were found in Johnson’s truck, according to the complaint.

Johnson has been convicted of misdemeanor theft, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.
