The East Troy School Board voted July 13 to allow Creative Learning Systems banners to hang in the new SmartLabs at Prairie View Elementary School and the middle school.
District Administrator Chris Hibner brought the banner, which comes with the SmartLabs, and asked the board to make the decision on whether it should be hung in the schools. Hibner told the board he wasn’t comfortable making the decision himself because of the possible “unintended consequences” of allowing promotional material such as the banner in the schools.
Hibner told the board the district’s policy would allow for the banners, as they were related to the education of the children, but there could be problems down the line.
“It could open a door and we could have banners all over the buildings,” School Board member Martha Bresler said.
Hibner agreed and said that’s why he wanted the board to make this decision.
School Board President Ted Zess said the district spent a “lot of money” on the SmartLabs and said it might be a good idea to promote them to the parents and students in the district.
“I look at it as a positive thing,” School Board member Sue Frohling said. “It showing something different with what we’re doing in our schools.”
Hibner said he recommendation would be to allow the banners, but that he understood some of the concerns. In the end, the board voted to hand the banners, but would revisit the decision if it caused problems in the future.
