School Board wants community input on new school name

The East Troy Community School District Board of Education is asking the public for its input on naming the new school.

While the board members all said they like Little Prairie Primary School, which was one of the four choices suggested by the students at Doubek Elementary School at the last meeting, there was some concern there hadn’t been enough community say in the choice.

The board members agreed that the feedback they’ve been receiving on Little Prairie has been positive, but acknowledged they each had only talked to a few people.

“It’s, by far, liked the most,” board member Martha Bresler said.

Board President Ted Zess and Vice-President Dawn Buchholtz echoed Bresler’s take on the response received so far, saying the people they’ve talked to have been overwhelming in support of it.

“I really like it,” board member Steve Lambrechts said. “But it’s going to be with us for a long time and I think we need to ask if this is the best choice.”

“I’ve wracked my brain and couldn’t come up with a better one myself,” Zess said, but agreed that seeking community feedback was a good idea.

The School District website, www.easttroy.k12.wi.us, will have a public comment link for residents to offer feedback on the name Little Prairie Primary School. Residents are also invited send a letter to the district office, 2043 Division St., East Troy, WI 53120, if they don’t have an internet connection.

The board will review the feedback before the June 13 regular meeting, when the matter will be on the agenda for discussion and possible action again.

New curriculum coordinator hired

Project-based learning teacher Melissa Deutsch was named the district’s new curriculum coordinator at Monday night’s meeting.

Deutsch applied for the newly created position, which will also include the duties of personalized learning coordinator and summer school coordinator. The former personalized learning position was folded into this new full-time position.

Deutsch has been with the district for 11 years and has run the project-based learning department for the last four years. She was one of 47 candidates to apply for the job after it was posted and six who were interviewed.

“I’m thrilled to see her stay with the district,” Bresler said. “But I’m sad to lose her in the classroom.”

Deutsch said she would be “in all the classrooms” now.
