Avoid long lines at the polls on Election Day

Area clerks are advising voters to register early for the April 5 Spring General Election. While registering to vote on Election Day is allowed, local municipal clerks say registering in advance will speed up the voting process on Election Day.

“On Election Day, the lines get really long,” East Troy Village Administrator Eileen Suhm said. “After that 5 p.m. hour they all come in and want to register on election day and if they don’t have the correct documents, things get held up.

“We’re just trying to get people registered early to speed up the process for them and to make sure they have the correct documents for proof of residency,” Suhm continued. “It’s just easier to do it in advance.”

Residents must provide proof of residency when registering to vote. Voters can visit myvote.wi.gov to see if they are properly registered.

Registration forms can be downloaded from local municipality websites, filled out in person at town/village hall, or mailed by request from:

  • Town of Troy, N8870 Briggs St., www.townoftroy.com (click on “Election Information”), (262) 642-5292. Town Hall is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon, and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Village of Mukwonago, 440 River Crest Court, www.villageofmukwonago.com (click on “Government Information” then “Elections”), (262) 363-6420. Village Hall is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.
  • Town of Mukwonago, W320 S8315 Beulah Road, wwwtownofmukwonago.us (click on “Elections and Voting), (262) 363-4555. Town Hall is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

March 16 is the last day to register to vote by mail. April 1 is the last day electors can register in the clerk’s office. In Person Absentee ballots may be cast from March 21 to April 1. March 31 is the final day voters can request an absentee ballot to be mailed to them.

IDs required to vote

A photo ID is required to vote on Election Day; be prepared and bring a photo ID to the polling place.
