Help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ on Saturday

Saturday is national Stamp Out Hunger day. East Troy residents wishing to participate can leave non-perishable food items in a study bag next to their mailbox for pick up during their regular mail delivery. The donated items will be given to the East Troy Food Pantry, to help area residents in need.

Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, United States Postal Service, Campbell Soup Co., Feeding America and other partners, Stamp Out Hunger is in its 22nd year. The annual food drive haws grown into a national effort to provide assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

“We’re proud to support the food drive,” says East Troy Postmaster Tom Curtis. “We’re asking residents for their support to help make this another successful year. It’s so easy to make a donation – simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by the mailbox to help your neighbors in need.”

Across the nation, 200,000 letter carriers will collect food donations in more than 10,000 communities and deliver them to local food banks and other hunger relief organizations. Last year, 74 million pounds of food was collected nationwide, this was the 10th consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected.

“Today, 40 million Americans, including 16 million children, are struggling with hunger,” says Curtis. “These are often hard-working adults or children and seniors who simply cannot make mends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals … or even days.”
