East Troy man injured in plane crash

An East Troy pilot was transported to Waukesha Memorial Hospital with apparent head injuries after the single-engine plane he designed and built flipped over on a private airstrip at Air Troy Estates.

A 79-year-old East Troy man was injured Saturday after a plane he designed and built crashed on a privately-maintained grass airstrip in the Town of East Troy.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office said Robert G. Scott was attempting to land his experimental 1969 Scottbuilt fixed wing X-S, known as “Old Iron Sides,” on the runway at Air Troy Estates, off of Sky Lane, at about 3:24 p.m. when he crashed.

Many residents who reside in the community have planes and hangars adjacent to the runway.

Upon arrival, first responders found a downed plane on the runway. Scott, the lone occupant in the aircraft, had to be extricated from the plane.

He was taken by East Troy ambulance to Waukesha Memorial Hospital with head injuries, the press release said. His condition is not known at this time.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and the FAA are coordinating the investigation of the crash.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the FAA on site, Wisconsin State Patrol, East Troy Fire and Rescue, and the Town of East Troy Police Department.
