Delavan American Legion Post 95 is in the final planning stages for a special flag retirement ceremony they’ll host next month.
According to Brian, the legion is teaming up with local scouts from Boy Scout Troop 328 and Girl Scout Troop 7328 for the event.
“It’ll feature the disposal of flags the proper way,” Balsewicz said, adding that while it might not be perfect, it’s a learning opportunity for the scouts, which is why they’ve enlisted the troops to participate.
The event will be Sunday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Park, which is across from Lake Comus in Delavan.
According to Balsewicz, legion members chose that time so the ceremony can go into dusk and, they hope some special people will be in attendance at the event.
“We’re planning to honor any veterans who attend the flag retirement ceremony by presenting them with a star cutout from an American flag,” he explained.
Balsewicz said the legion hopes to have the canteen at the park open that night so guests have the option of purchasing refreshments.
While additional details are still being worked out, he said the priority now is getting the word out – to all throughout the community and especially, to veterans.
“We would love people to come out and observe the ceremony while supporting the local scouts at the same time,” Balsewicz said. “And please, if you know of a local veteran, let them know about the event and encourage them to attend so we can honor them.”
Balsewicz, Rutledge-Boviall-Schauf-Madison Post 95 was named after five men who died while serving: George Rutledge and William Rutledge – World War I; Walter Boviall – World War II; Douglas Schauf – Korean War; and Thomas Madison – Vietnam War.
