The Wisconsin School for the Deaf has 16 graduating seniors this year. Each one of them attended school in Delavan during the week but live in various towns and cities all over the state. The following four students from this area graduated with WSD’s Class of 2021 on June 11.
Caitlyn Buchman
Buchman, of Elkhorn, joined WSD as a fourth grader, and has truly blossomed over the years, according to school officials.
In her time at the school, she has been involved as a player on the volleyball and basketball teams, a member of the Sign Song Dancers, Academic Bowl team, Jr. NAD, National Honor Society and was in the spring play her freshman year.
She has also earned all-year honor roll, perfect attendance and PBIS Positive Behavior award throughout her high school career.
Buchman plans on studying creative writing at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.
Jalila Martens
Martens, of Sharon, is a long-time WSD student, attending since the third grade and has made the most of her experience, school officials report.
During her high school career, she has participated on the volleyball, basketball, track and field and cheer teams. She has also been involved in Sign Song Dancers, Student Body Government, and Jr. NAD.
She has earned many awards such as perfect attendance, honor roll, PBIS Positive Behavior and art awards.
Martens plans on attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee where she will major in general education and minor in science.
Thomas Robertson
Robertson, also known as TJ, has spent his entire educational career at WSD, from preschool to 12th grade. During his time at the high school level, he has been on the football, basketball and track and field teams, been involved with Sign Song Dancers, the Academic Bowl team, the winter play, Student Body Government, Jr. NAD and the weightlifting club.
He has also earned many awards including honor roll, the Marie Jean Phillips Award for storytelling, the PBIS Positive Behavior award and student athlete of the month award.
Robertson plans on studying to be a car mechanic at a Blackhawk Technical College.
Dana Tuy
Tuy, of Janesville, spent her junior and senior years at WSD, which school officials were thankful for, they said.
In her short time here, she maintained her academic progress and earned high honor roll, the PBIS Positive Behavior award, the National Chuck Baird De’VIA award and the 2020 Youth Photography honorable mention.
Tuy plans on enrolling in the school’s STEP program to continue strengthening her independent living skills.

The Wisconsin School for the Deaf is a residential school for students 3 to 21 years old who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind from throughout Wisconsin.
WSD is a program under the Wisconsin Educational Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, which also includes the Outreach Services program and our Statewide Deafblind grant project. WESP-DHH operates under the direction of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
