This week, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation was scheduled to begin rehabilitation work along 16 miles of Interstate 43, from Highway 12 in Elkhorn to the Rock County line.
The improvements, scheduled to begin today, are expected to be complete by fall of 2021.
Work will include the following improvements:
- Pavement improvements consisting of diamond grinding, joint repair and base patching along 16 miles of I-43;
- Throughout the corridor, 32 structures will receive a variety of improvements ranging from bridge deck replacements, concrete deck overlays, and steel bridge girder painting.
The interstate will remain open to traffic during construction and single-lane closures in each direction will be staggered and limited to four miles in length.
Drivers should expect overnight, short-term ramp and adjacent crossroad closures.
Long-term, alternating ramp closures will be needed during the project to allow for bridge deck replacements at the County Road X, Highway 67 and Highway 12 interchanges though consecutive ramps will not be closed at the same time, according to the DOT.
There may be a few, intermittent overnight full freeway closures for storm sewer/culvert crossing repairs.
The contractor, Rock Road Companies, Inc. plans on completing the $25.5 million project by fall of 2021. However, the schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.
