It was the 40-year celebration of the annual event
Wisconsin School for the Deaf basketball coaches and student-athletes recently traveled to take part in a special camp.
The group, from the Deaf school in Delavan, went to Dectaur, GA to celebrate 40 years of Mike Glenn’s All-Star Basketball Camp for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Mike Glenn’s camp is the nation’s first basketball camp for deaf and hard of hearing athletes ages 14 to 18. During the weeklong camp, students went through a variety of basketball drills to enhance their skills.
The highlight of the camp, according to Wisconsin School for the Deaf representatives, was seeing a few tricks from past and present members of the Harlem Globetrotters.
“The Harlem Legends and Chris “Animal” Hyche of the Harlem Globetrotters were special guests at the camp. Hyche, whose parents are deaf, also answered questions to the campers,” they said.
“He inspired the deaf and hard of hearing campers with his dunk shows for the campers,” WSC staff added.
One of many special moments also included the local group being invited to a banquet to recognize Mike Glenn’s 40th anniversary at the Georgia Aquarium.
“It had many great guest speakers and many of the presenters mentioned that Mike Glenn has a big heart for deaf and hard of hearing basketball campers,” they explained. “We thanked him for his leadership and vision to make the camp a huge success.”
Congratulations are in order for the Wisconsin School for the Deaf’s student-athletes, Madison Bongard who was among those recognized as 3-on-3 champions, Cayden Rawlings, who won with the boys tournament champions and Caitlyn Buchman’s team, who won the girls 5-on-5 championship.
Another honor worth noting, Eliza Camino was selected as the girls all star at the camp.
