The Town of Delavan board discussed taking the next step toward construction of a new fire station on Dec. 18. An advisory referendum passed in November supported borrowing up to $4 million over 15 years to replace Fire Station No. 1.
Administrator John Olson said Scherrer Construction, a company the town has done business with in the past, contacted him after the referendum passed and offered its “construction management services.” He said the town has been satisfied with the work Scherrer has done in the past and they have experience building fire stations.
Olson told the board that the usual practice is to hire an architect and an engineer to design the building and prepare bidding for a general contracting contract for the project. Companies like Scherrer would then bid on that contract. Scherrer, Olson said, proposed an alternate option that he called a hybrid approach. Scherrer has proposed to offer the town “construction management services” and then bidding out all the subcontracting for the project, which Scherrer could bid on as well.
