Delavan-Darien High School, despite being the smallest of the three schools competing, won the first annual Hunt Off Hunger campaign that ended on Nov. 30.
D-DHS competed against Elkhorn Area and Lake Geneva Badger high schools throughout the month of November to see which school could collect the most food to be donated to local pantries.
Delavan-Darien High School collected more than 2,275 pounds of the 5,000 total pounds collected and those food items were donated to the Harold Johnson Food Pantry in Delavan. The campaign was capped off by a collection at the Nov. 30 home basketball game against Cudahy, which allowed free admission with a donation and raffle tickets good for gift card drawings.
Department of Natural Resources Conservation Warden Michael Katzenberg presented the first trophy for the campaign to the school board on Dec. 10. Katzenberg said he was born and raised in Walworth County and wanted to find a way to give back to the greater community. He said he contacted the three school principals and brainstormed ideas to come up with Hunt Off Hunger.
“It was a way to get students and the community involved and bring notice to how people can impact so many other people,” Katzenberg said.
He said the three pantries that received donations told him that more than 4,000 people were impacted by the campaign.
“It’s a great honor and you should be really proud,” Katzenberg said of Delavan-Darien’s first-place finish.
