The Delavan Common Council appointed Delavan-Darien High School teacher Carri Deschner-Brandt to the council Nov. 20 to fill the Second District seat vacated with the resignation of former Alderman Chris Phillips on Oct. 5. Deschner-Brandt will run for election to the seat in April.
She has lived in Delavan for 30 years and taught at D-DHS for 16 years. In her letter of interest for the position, Deschner-Brandt said she is passionate about the school and her community and has donated much time to outside organizations to make the community a stronger and more vibrant place to live. Through that volunteer time, she said she has witnessed first-hand the needs and strengths of the city.
Deschner-Brandt is a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church With School and the Delavan Lions Club and serves as the vice president of ARC, which aides cognitively disabled citizens.
Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis thanked Phillips for his service to the council and to his country as his resignation is the result of being deployed until next September as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. Nieuwenhuis said the council deliberated over whether or not to fill the seat or allow it to remain vacant until the April election and decided to fill the seat.
Three candidates submitted letters of interest. In addition to Deschner-Brandt, Sam Riggs and Ron Grair were also interested in filling the seat. Both said they would run for the seat in April against Deschner-Brandt.
