The Delavan Common Council is looking to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Alderman Chris Phillips at its Nov. 20 meeting. Phillips resigned effective Oct. 5.
Phillips has served on the council since April 2013. His term was set to expire in April. Phillips is in the Army Reserve and has been deployed. Phillips expects his deployment to last until at least September.
“I am not doing the taxpayers any justice to finish off this year trying to manage stuff from where I am at,” Phillips said at the Sept. 18 council meeting.
Phillips said he chose Oct. 5 as his resignation date to give the council time to find a replacement in time for its November council meeting.
“I am looking forward to seeing who steps in during my absence,” he said in his resignation email to the council.
Council President Jeff Johnson, who ran the council meeting on Sept. 18 in the absence of Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis, said he was sorry to see Phillips go.
“You have served the city very well in my estimation,” Johnson said.
Phillips has served on the Public Works Committee, the Community Development Authority, the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Library Board and the Tourism Commission.
Anyone interested in filling Phillip’s seat until April should submit a letter of interest to the city no later than Nov. 15. Whoever is appointed would run for the seat in the April election.
