As Delavan-area voters head to the polls Tuesday, they’ll be asked to vote on a referendum that would allow the Delavan-Darien School District to exceed state revenue caps.
The referendum contains two parts – it asks to exceed the revenue cap by $3.5 million for three years and $3 million thereafter.
In other words, the levy would be raised from $33 million to $36.5 million for three years and then the levy would be set at $36 million after that with no further increases.
The bulk of the increase, $3 million of the $3.5 million in the first three years and all $3 million after that, is to provide the district more money with which to operate. That portion of the referendum is recurring, meaning it will not expire. The levy will remain at $36 million going forward rather than returning to $33 million. The levy cannot increase any more than that in the future without another referendum.
The referendum also includes $500,000 a year for three years in a non-recurring manner, meaning it will expire after the three years is up. That money would be used for improvements to Borg Stadium, a new track, a new artificial football and soccer field and improvements to vocational areas of the high school including a new culinary arts area.
Local polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. Voters are required to present a photo identification card to receive a ballot.
