A former Darien Village Board trustee was killed Tuesday in a two-car crash in the Town of Darien.

Craig McCue, 61, of Darien, died at a local trauma center after a crash at about 8:25 a.m. Tuesday at S&D Townline and Salt Box roads.

When Walworth County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, a Ford F350 truck driven by Bradley Ellefson, of Clinton, was on its roof in the ditch on the northwest corner of the intersection with severe front-end damages, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

A white 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue that McCue was driving was in the cornfield a short distance from the red pickup with severe passenger-side damage.

Deputies extricated McCue from the car and provided initial medical treatment to McCue and Ellefson, who was also injured, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Initial investigation indicates Ellefson was driving west on S&D Townline Road, and McCue was driving north on Salt Box Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at S&D Townline Road, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The truck had the right of way and was struck in its passenger side, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Ellefson was transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to a local trauma center. McCue was also transported to a local trauma center with critical injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

In August 2009, McCue suffered a stroke in the midst of his second term on the Darien Village Board. The attack ended his tenure on the board, and trustee Ken Truckey was appointed to replace him in early 2010.

McCue served on the board during controversy surrounding former Police Chief Steve Devoy and was a supporter of Devoy.
