Police: Driver was experiencing medical emergency
A 65-year-old Elkhorn man experiencing a medical emergency crashed the vehicle he was driving through a fence at Lake Lawn Resort and struck a tree last week.
Town of Delavan police began pursuing the man’s vehicle after receiving reports that he was driving recklessly on Highway 50 at about 1:50 p.m. May 23.
The vehicle had sideswiped one car and nearly struck other vehicles, according to Town of Delavan police. Offers located the vehicle still driving west on Highway 50 at Classic Drive and attempted to pull the driver over. The driver failed to stop for the officers, and police pursued the vehicle.
Approaching the high traffic area on Highway 50 at Geneva Crossings, the officers decided to stop the vehicle by utilizing the PIT maneuver – a law enforcement technique that forces a fleeing car to abruptly turn sideways –just west of the Lake Lawn entrance. The fleeing driver lost control of his vehicle, went through the fence onto the Lake Lawn golf course and came to a stop after striking a tree, according to police.
The driver, whose name police are withholding, did not appear to be injured but was experiencing a medical emergency at the time of the incident. No one else was injured.
