Whitewater man arrested for shooting deer on game farm

A Whitewater man was arrested for allegedly killing a deer on a Rock County game farm after posting photos of the trophy buck on social media.

Daniel Deegan reported to the Town of Fulton Police on Sept. 25 that one of his deer was missing from his farm, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office. The deer was an adult buck and was last seen alive in the pen on Sept. 21. There was evidence in the pen that the buck was shot and killed with an arrow.

On Sept. 22, a picture of a buck, purportedly killed locally by a bow hunter, was circulating on social media. Deegan saw the photo and identified the buck as his missing deer.

The person in the photo with the buck was identified as Darrick Edward Matthew Riggs of Whitewater, according to officials. With help from the Wisconsin DNR, investigators learned that Riggs registered the deer in Jefferson County.

On Sept. 27 a Rock County sheriff’s deputy and detective contacted Riggs at his Whitewater address. During the interview, Riggs allegedly admitted to killing the deer and taking it home. He told the investigators that he had to throw the meat away because he believed it was spoiled, however, he kept the horns.

The horns were turned over to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and placed into evidence. Riggs told investigators that his stepbrother Christopher assisted in the killing and the removal of the deer.

Darrick Riggs was arrested for burglary and theft of a domesticated animal. His brother, Christopher A. Dostal Riggs-Boss, was arrested for party to the crime of burglary and theft of a domesticated animal.

Both Darrick Riggs and Christopher Dostal Riggs-Boss were booked at the Rock County Jail and released with a court date of Monday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Rock County Courthouse.

The burglary was the result of Darrick Riggs entering a building on the property where he cut the cables to the surveillance cameras.
