Area residents asked to leave non-perishable food items by mailboxes
The National Association of Letter Carriers, U.S. Postal Service and other community partners are asking the area residents to help Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 14.
The national food drive, on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Last year, American donated more than 70 million pounds of food. It was the 12th year in a row at least 70 million pounds of food was collected by letter carriers. Since 1993, the food drive has collected 1.4 billion pounds of food to feed the nation’s hungry.
Recommended items include: canned soup, canned fruits and vegetables, canned tuna peanut butter, pasta, rice and cereal. The items should be left in a sturdy bag, by the mailbox, for pickup during the letter carriers’ regular Saturday route. Donated items will be given to local food pantries.
