Sen. Neal Kedzie visited Steven Pils at Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly in Lake Geneva Oct. 21 as part of the Take Your Legislator to Work Campaign, organized each year by the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The campaign coordinates visits to workplaces between legislators and their constituents with disabilities who are working at community-based, competitive-wage jobs. During the visits, legislators experience first-hand the value of community-integrated employment for both people with disabilities and the state.
When people with disabilities work in the community at a competitive wage, they are less likely to rely on publicly-funded programs. And, 87 percent of customers say they would prefer to patronize businesses that employ people with disabilities.
“I have participated in two successful Take Your Legislator to Work Campaign visits,” said Sen. Kedzie in a news release. “Governor Walker had the opportunity to job shadow Mr. Pils last year and I’m honored he asked me to join him this year.”
Steven Pils has worked as a grocery bagger and cart pusher at Stinebrink’s Piggly Wiggly in Lake Geneva for 10 years. He says he enjoys meeting customers and working with the Stinebrink’s team. Steven got his job at Stinebrink’s through VIP Services.
