Sept. 26 luncheon to benefit its Tree House facility
The Walworth County Alliance for Children (WCAC) has announced Erin Merryn, a nationally recognized sexual abuse prevention advocate, will be the featured speaker at its Tree House Luncheon on Sept. 26.
The event supports the WCAC Child and Family Center, also known as the Tree House, which serves children and families in the county affected by child abuse and neglect. It was built and is operated solely with private funds.
Merryn, 28, was a victim of sexual abuse as a child and has become known across the country for her work as an activist, advocate and author on the subject of childhood sexual abuse. She led the successful effort in Illinois to enact “Erin’s Law” in 2010. The law, which she has since helped to pass in six additional states and introduce in 14 others, requires that age-appropriate sexual abuse prevention curriculum is taught from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
In 2012, Glamour Magazine named Merryn its Woman of the Year in recognition of her efforts. The author of two books, with a third to be published in November, Ms. Merryn has been interviewed on Oprah, Katie Couric, Montel Williams, Good Morning America and Today, and by many of the country’s most widely read publications. She travels the country advocating for the passage of “Erin’s Law” and the prevention of childhood sexual abuse, and for those children who have been victimized by sexual abuse.
“We are delighted that Erin has agreed to join us for our annual Tree House Luncheon,” said Bridget Six, a WCAC board member. “Erin’s message of recovery and prevention, coupled with the great experiences she can relate from her travels around the country, will provide a thought-provoking centerpiece to this important event for the Walworth County Alliance for Children. We look forward to hosting all those who are interested in hearing Erin’s powerful message and supporting the WCAC’s efforts to help the county’s abused and neglected children.”
The Tree House Luncheon is being held on Sept. 26 at 11:30 a.m. at Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wis. Tickets for the event are $75 per person.
