An Elkhorn-based recycling business, with plans to build an electronic recycling center in Whitewater, is setting its sights on building an out-of-state plant first.
DP Electronic Recycling, 540 E. Centralia St., wants to create a recycling plant located in Whitewater’s Technology Park that would employ roughly 100 people. However, a patent is pending for the process the company desires to utilize in recycling cathode ray tubes from older computers and television sets into floor tiles. The recycling company also is working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for approval for the planned plant.
Meanwhile, the company already has received approval to build a plant in Arkansas. As such, it will start a CRT plant there first.
Due to the fact CRT contains toxic chemical material, DP must work with the state DNR to make certain its process of hazardous waste recycling will be conducted in an environmentally friendly way.
“I think we’re using a reasonable amount of caution because our mission, in part, is to protect the environment and public health, said Ed Lynch, DNR hazardous waste program chief.
