Two teenagers from the Burlington area suffered serious injuries when the car they were in left the road and crashed into a tree in Town of Lyons shortly before 8 a.m. New Year’s Day.

The driver of the car, Danielle J. Curley, 19, of rural Burlington and her passenger, Gianna Gaiser, 17, of Lyons, suffered multiple injuries. They were transported from the scene in separate Flight for Life helicopters to a Milwaukee area hospital, according to Capt. Scott McClory of the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.

A condition report on the teens was not available to the media. According to several sources, Gaiser is a senior at Burlington High School.

The incident indicates Curley was driving east in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am on a straight section of Sheridan Springs Road Near Back Road when her car left the road and struck the tree. The speed limit is 35 mph in that area.

Both Curley and Gaiser were trapped in the car and had to be extricated by rescue personnel. The report noted the neither was wearing safety equipment, however, airbags were deployed.

“The road was free of ice or snow, so we’re looking at other factors,” McClory said.

Those could include speed, falling asleep, inattentive driving or driver impairment, he added.

The investigation is ongoing, according to McClory.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by Lake Geneva and Lyons fire and rescue units and City of Lake Geneva police.
