After hashing out the decision over three meetings, the Walworth Village Board on Monday opted to contract a new service provider for its garbage disposal services.
John’s Disposal of Whitewater was awarded a five-year contract to provide automated recycling and refuse service to the Village. John’s, which had already been providing recycling services, will also take on waste pickup, replacing Keizer and Sons of Delavan which had been providing the service for nearly four decades.
The contract awards John’s a fee of $8.25 per month per residence for weekly refuse pick up and $3,25 per month for bi-weekly recycling pick-up.
The change will save the Village $17,000 per year, according to officials.
At the previous two meetings, the board was split on the vote, delaying the decision.
On Monday, the John’s contract was passed 4-3, on a verbal vote.
The automated service, which comes with 96-gallon wheeled bins, is expected to begin on April 1.
The larger bins should be delivered to each residence in the village by that time. Because it is an automated service, non-conforming trash and recycling receptacles will not be acceptable once automated service begins.
Refuse will be picked up weekly; recycling will be picked up bi-weekly.
Residents who are elderly or disabled can request 48 gallon bins if they believe the larger bins might be too bulky.
Because of the cost savings, the Village will not need to move part of the refuse/recycling cost to residents’ water and sewer bills as other municipalities have had to do, owing to the state law that prevents levy increases for any reason.
Keizer and Sons, whose contract with the village expires December 31, 2012, will continue to provide services through April.
