State Superintendent Tony Evers will was expected to visit the Wisconsin School for the Deaf on Monday for a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of a new high school building.
Construction was expected to start Monday and last 13 months.
The new high school building will replace Walker Hall, built in 1911, which had 21,500 square feet. The new building will be 23,000 square feet and will consolidate support services into one area. The project is expected to cost $4.93 million, and McGill Construction of Elkhorn is the builder.
The building will serve students in ninth through 12th grades and will be connected to the Neesam Gymnasium, health center and dining room complex, which will improve security and transition in bad weather. Classrooms are designed for the deaf and hard of hearing with an emphasis on visual education.
